Californians with low incomes, the elderly, disabled, and other transit-dependent populations, have difficulty accessing fresh, nutritious food – the live with “food insecurity”. Meanwhile, the majority of the nation’s farmers struggle to stay in business and on the land. They face challenges in finding transportation options, markets, and fair prices for the food they grow.
To address these issues, the Growers Collaborative is developing a innovative new low-cost fruit and vegetable box and a mobile urban farm stand to serve a mix of communities including many food-insecure neighborhoods in the areas of Los Angeles and the Central Coast that house the institutions that the Growers Collaborative already serves.
Fruit and Vegetable Box
Growers Collaborative is developing a small fruit and vegetable box that will be supplied at drop points where demand is aggregated for a minimum order of 25-50 boxes, such as hospitals, community centers, and faith-based organizations. Subscription to the Box will be facilitated through local community organizations, faith-based organizations and institutions.
Urban Farm Stand
Growers Collaborative is developing an Urban Farm Stand that will sell fresh produce from local farmers at a single stand – a type of miniature farmers market – manned by a single grower from the collaborative. While maintaining the “farmer connection” that makes farmers’ markets so unique, the Growers Collaborative Urban Farm Stand will offer access to fresh fruits and vegetables at competitive prices to urban residents. The Stand will be available for hospitals and community organizations on a regular basis, and can also be organized for special events at any location with an active food concessionaire license.
